Math OER
Achievements

It is because modern education is so seldom inspired by a great hope that it so seldom achieves a great result.

- Bertrand Russell

After you give me your code name, the following drop-down menu will personalize this page with your achievements.

If you do not see very recent changes, try a hard refresh.

How is our class graded?

First, following the lead of someone named Robert Talbert, I use a + or − after your letter grade to measure class participation. If you earn 30 or more achievements that puts a + after your letter grade. If you earn fewer than 14 achievements that puts a − after your letter grade.

Second, your letter grade measures the breadth of your learning. Homework assignments and the final exam measure mastery of the math topics. Earning 3 or more achievements in a color group measures mastery of the study skills.

To earn an A, you will need all of these things:
• 85% or more on the final exam
• all 10 weekly homeworks, but each color with 3 or more achievements counts too

To earn an B, you will need all of these things:
• 75% or more on the final exam
• 9 weekly homeworks, but each color with 3 or more achievements counts too

To earn an C, you will need all of these things:
• 70% or more on the final exam
• 8 weekly homeworks, but each color with 3 or more achievements counts too

Note for future terms:

I start each term with an additional requirement of a certain amount of weekly Moodle forum participation required for each letter grade. The students hate that because Moodle forums are okay for sharing but not for analyzing. Then I talk to the class and we all agree to loosen the requirement to allow either weekly forum or study group participation. Ta da! Now they are eager to do study groups, when they were not before. Finally, at the end of the term I talk to the class again and we all agree to drop the requirement altogether to allow the students that are way behind some chance of catching up.

Evaluate the Answer

(If I was teaching in a normal term this section would have achievements for group work with homework assignments. I did not prepare those for this term. Part of teaching remotely is that I am much more generous about telling students which homework problems they get correct instead of forcing them to compare work during class time. Sadly, you get less practice with the valuable skill of discussing your homework drafts with classmates.)
